  23. |MUSTANG - Owners said no cause can be found for the two     |
  24. |mutilated black cattle, which were found dead in fields     |
  25. |about 60 miles apart, followins a full moon.                |
  26. |The cattle, in Canadian and Blaine counties, had their      |
  27. |sex organs removed.                                         |
  28. |Mustang Police Chief Ron Lewis said his office              |
  29. |recently investigated the mutilation of a 1,100- pound      |
  30. |Angus cow. Blaine County Undersheriff Kent Sexton said      |
  31. |his office was called to the ranch of Galen Slagell near    |
  32. |Hydro the same morning to investigate the mutilation of     |
  33. |a 70-pound Angus steer. Although Lewis said he is not       |
  34. |versed on cults, he thinks some type of cult                |
  35. |celebration that coincides with Passover might be           |
  36. |responsible for the mutilations.  Lewis and Sexton          |
  37. |said their investigations turned up some similarities. No   |
  38. |blood was found at the scene of either mutilation, and      |
  39. |Lewis and Sexton said both cattle appeared to be "drained   |
  40. |of blood." The interior and exterior sex organs, tongues    |
  41. |and one eye from each animal had been removed. The cow      |
  42. |found in Canadian County was missing her left ear and       |
  43. |a patch of hide over her ribs on the right side.  The       |
  44. |cow's owner, who asked not to be identified, said he        |
  45. |wonders what "idiots" would mutilate an animal, and he      |
  46. |would like to have the cow's death solved. He said he       |
  47. |checked his cattle the evening before the mutilation. "I    |
  48. |had just worked them and I knew I didn't have any sick      |
  49. |ones. When I went to check them, I saw her and I knew she   |
  50. |was dead by the way she was laying." He said he was         |
  51. |angry at first because he thought someobe had shot her      |
  52. |and left her for the coyotes. A closer look showed him      |
  53. |the mutilation was not the work of coyotes. There were      |
  54. |some droPs of blood on the ground, but no blood came from   |
  55. |any of the wounds. He said this was odd because when        |
  56. |someone shoots a cow, a death struggle occurs and there     |
  57. |is a lot of blood. He also said the cow was in an           |
  58. |area of dirt and there were no tracks, neither human or     |
  59. |animal around her.                                          |
  60. |"When I walked up, I left tracks," he said.                 |
  61. |He said he checked the animal carefully and could not       |
  62. |find a cause of death. The cow's death will continue to     |
  63. |be a problem. Her 4-month-old calf, which would not         |
  64. |normally be weaned for another two months, now will not     |
  65. |grow as rapidly, and the cow had been bred and was about    |
  66. |two months pregnant. Undersheriff Sexton said it had        |
  67. |rained before the steer was found near Hydro and the        |
  68. |ground was soft. "There were no prints,'i Sexton said. He   |
  69. |said he has been around cattle all his life, and "this      |
  70. |wasn't coyotes." Ranch owner Slagell agreed: "I don't       |
  71. |know of any coyotes that carry knives." Sexton said         |
  72. |veterinarian Tim Lowry also couldn't find a bullet hole.    |
  73. |"We're baffled." he said. Although Lowry said, "There       |
  74. |definitely was a human hand involved," Slagell said he      |
  75. |was still not ruling out the possibility that the           |
  76. |mutilation could have been done by vultures. : But Blaine   |
  77. |County Assistant District attorney George Burnett said      |
  78. |the steer "obviously was surgically cut ... If someone      |
  79. |saw something, it may help us solve the case."              |
